 Extract and Flavoring Info
Extracts and flavorings are used to give foods taste interest and flavor to foods such as cakes, frostings, cookies, candies, desserts, and some beverages which have the addition of sweetener.  The use of these items in beverages is limited.

At Spice Barn, we label a product "extract" if it is made with all natural ingredients.  If a product is part natural and part artificial, or all artificial, we label it a "flavoring".

Our products are baking grade and are not meant for crafts or potpourri.  As baking grade products, they are designed to be used with some type of sweetener.  The sugar brings out the flavor of the product.

Cooking:  All flavors should be used sparingly so as not to overpower the flavor blend of the finished product.  Over use will result in a bitter flavor.  To retain the greatest flavor in foods such as puddings and pie fillings, extracts and flavorings are added to the food when it is cooling or after cooling.

Storage: Flavorings are very volatile, or evaporate rapidly.  The bottle should be kept tightly closed and away from heat.

Shelf Life:  Citrus flavored products, such as lemon and orange, will only have a shelf life of about 6 months, if stored properly.  Other types of products should maintain their flavor for a year, if stored properly.
